5 Ways to Become a Better Dad

“He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah,
to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children…”(Luke 1:17)

As the Lord turns the hearts of the fathers back to their children, we can expect to see not only a spiritual activation of fathering come to the forefront, but a natural positioning of men who will step more and more into their roles as fathers in their own homes. Below are 5 ways for every father who wants to improve his fathering skills as he takes his divine role in his family:

1. Be more active. Fathers leave an imprint on the lives of their children from the moment they are born. In their divine role, they are carriers of generational blessings and have an ability to establish a heritage for their children. It’s therefore important for fathers to actively forge a bond of love and support from the very beginning of their child’s life. (Gen. 48:9)

2. Get more practice. As the old saying goes, practice makes perfect! If you try something in parenting and it doesn’t work, or it is not as effective as what you desired, then practice a different technique. There is a grace that God gives you for your role as a father, and strategies to go along with your position. Look to your heavenly Father for those strategies and techniques! (Phil. 4:13)

3. Let your approach to your kids be unique. Men and women have different ways of interacting with their children. God must have known this would be the case when He gave children both a mother and a father. Laugh with them, lead them, and love them. Make memories with your children of their dad that will forever be etched in their hearts and minds. (Deut. 6:5-7)

4. Be emotionally available to your children. Don’t ever give your children the opportunity to believe that you are cold or disinterested in life. Whether it is in your involvement with them, in your marriage, in your job, or in the church, children should be able to see a dad that lives with passion and purpose. (Prov. 22:6)

5. Be a man of God at all times. One of the most powerful examples you can set as a father is that of a truly spiritual man. No matter what you may or may not be able to provide in the natural, if you are a spiritual man who is as true to what he believes on Monday as he is in the church on Sunday, you will provide something to your children that money can never buy - a Godly heritage. (Josh. 24:15)
